Ok, I am 100% serious on this one. I LOVE the circus. I love everything about it. I love Peta, $9 snow-cones, every Hispanic in the state of Utah under the same roof, the weird clowns, the animals...seriously I love everything about the circus. So naturally, when I found out that Barnum and Bailey "The Greatest Show on Earth" would be stopping SLC again this year of course I was there opening night.
As a kid, I remember being quite scared of the circus because my Great Grandmas Lila would always act like the circus was the scariest most evil organization on the planet. It's probably because her brother ditched the family and joined the circus as a kid and was never heard from again....and as anyone in my family will tell you, "She swore she would NEVER do something like that to her family." So, the circus was never really something I was super involved with...until last year when I decided to go and support a new organization Jason Sanders put together "C.A.P.T"...Clowns Are People Too. You know, for the ethical treatment of clowns. He and his groupies dressed up as clowns with picket signs and all. Naturally, I didn't want to miss out on this...but since we beat them down there we got sucked into the lights, the animals, the creeps and before we knew it we were in line to purchase tickets. This has now become and annual event I will be looking forward to. Christin and MJ...you were terribly missed! Maybe next year.
Some of my favorite things from the circus this year:
-The Energy Solutions Arena uses the term "Vision Obstruction" quite loosely. What they meant to say is anything that is not happening on the floor you will not be able to see at all.
-The Lion Trainer was not so impressive when you can see the stage crew dressed in black poking the tiger when its supposed to get down off the podium. And what language are they speaking anyways, I swear its not even real words.
-The scary ball of death. Instead of one motorcyclist, they had 7. I had a sever anxiety attack but it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen.
-The contortionists, I don't even know what to say both those things are about as freaky as they come. But it's like a train wreck, you can't look away.
-The scary PETA people that asked me to "Change my mind" while I am walking in. Yeah after booking it downtown I am not going to turn around and go home. Sorry PETA, the guilt tactic doesn't work on me. But I did appreciate the paper inform me about The Cruelest Show on Earth.
I let PETA ruin the show for me last year, several times I felt so guilty watching the little elephants that I could hardly enjoy myself. I didn't let that happen this year because when that little elephant came skipping out from behind the curtain I swear I saw it give a little smile.

You didn't quite get Grandma Gildea's serious tone down. It was "I would NEVER...NEVER do that to my parents." Oh, and she said it through gritted teeth. I think that was the most mad I ever saw her, with the exception of when we would giggle too much at the dinner table. Then she would say rather tersely, "Girls...Girls! Stop that, I said stop it right now!" Which of course only made us laugh even harder. Oh, the good old days.
I have never been to the circus, and from your description, I have to say that I don't feel like I am missing out on anything.
Love you girl!! I haven't been to a circus for YEARS maybe I should try again. PETA is really out there? That is wierd.
The PETA people are crazazy! Did you hear that they asked Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream to stop using cows milk and instead use human milk?!
so fun! and opening night, none the less! your such a fun girl!!
oh glitter. never a disapointment! i love it! it reminds me of evil caneivel days in butte. (i don't know how to spell his name.) they had a creepy motorcyle death ball too. and those kids are so young.. i had to enjoy all the festivities by myself because todd had to work and there are no other sane people in butte that understood that what we were watching was absurd. anyway, you are the best!
"C.A.P.T.: Clowns Are People Too?!" Okay, that has Jason Sanders written all over it! You've always been so good to support your friends!!
Do you think that I would make it as a Carnie Kate? Well let me know, also you should visit our blog. www.brockandarrienne.blogspot.com
This is about as far as I have gotten with the internet social bit-ness. Facebook is still a long way off.
Talk to you later, and remember whenever you are struggling just think "All night long, all night, all night" And any thought of Lionel will make everything all better.
Oh! Kate, I miss you. I haven't been to the circus in years. WE keep saying we want to take Hope to see it. Hey, you totally missed grandpa's birthday party. Anyway, if you get a chance check out my page because little Luke got a big owee!
the only memory i have of the circus is when i was little, my brother's friend took us all, but her niece peed her pants cause she was so scared--she was trying to hide it by standing against a wall, but ended up leaving a long pee streak down the wall as she slid along.
also, i think i would love to meet that crazy grandmother of yours.
I guess I am way behind, I did not know you had updated your blog! Funny stories. That Jason, he is somethin! You were good to go support him. I love the elephants! We went to the fair last week and all the baby animals were so cute! Must have been fun to see the elephant smile!!
I miss doing lame stuff like that or making up stupid crap like CAPT, which is hilarious. I find I overuse that word on this blog...
Anyway, glad you enjoyed yourself, though I must admit I did a report on the mistreatment of circus elephants for freshman English. I even dressed up like one. I'm back down off my pedastool {or should I say PETAstool -which is a pun also because that is how an Aussie {kiwi actually} would say it...
